There is nothing like a drive in the tranquil countryside to help unwind from the hectic pace of city life.  A chance to bask in the quiet serenity of country lanes, lush pastures, and the scent of freshly cut hay drifting through the air.  Or catch a glimpse of horses, cows and sheep grazing in the midday sun.  If you crave this relaxing atmosphere, or wish to have a glimpse of days gone by, this is exactly what you will find when driving through the township of Adelaide Metcalfe.  This quiet rural area nestled along the Sydenham River, was once home to many churches, mills and factories. As you pass down the history laden road into Napier, you will find yourself imagining the activity at the general store. Or picturing a time when children played outside the old one-room school house.  You might even hear the echoes of past congregations mingling after the sermon at St. Mary’s Anglican Church.  St. Mary’s is the oldest church in Middlesex County, and is historically linked to the founding of Napier more than 160 years ago.  Its pioneer exterior adorned with the original wood from black walnut trees, is rustic in comparison to its interior.  These black walnut trees were donated by Captain Beer, an early settler to Napier in 1835.  He, like so many others who helped build this church, is buried in the adjoining cemetery.  Although St. Mary’s stopped having regular services in 1933, you are still welcome to stop by and have a peek around the grounds. (In the month of June an annual service takes place, a time when the church is open to the public).

Have you or your children had the opportunity to see a grist mill stone wheel up close?  See the one on display in Napier.  Marvel at the ingenious construction. How about the rough hewn construction of a pioneer log cabin?  There is also that one-room school house dating back to 1910.  These are a few of the reminders of life as it once was in Adelaide Metcalfe.  As for the banks of the Sydenham River, they are home to many unusual and interesting creatures like Flying Squirrels, Mudpuppies and the American Badger.  A visit to this area is an experience and subtle adventure the whole family can enjoy, as you try to spot some of this rare wildlife.  Take a drive out to Adelaide Metcalfe at your first opportunity.  Enjoy the sights and sounds of a peaceful place.  You will quickly come to understand what is meant by “small in size; great in spirit!”
