As you crest the hill on Hwy 4 just 15 minutes north of London, you will enter the world of Lucan Biddulph. It is primarily a prosperous and thriving agricultural region consisting of Lucan, Granton and Clandeboye. Visitors and residents alike are treated to a small town experience; but with a major difference - all the conveniences of a larger urban centre. Although early history favours a strong aboriginal presence, the first known settlers in the region were freed slaves from the United States. This original settlement was then known as the Wilberforce Colony. As this colony gradually dwindled it underwent name changes. First it was renamed Marystown. Then, in 1872, became Lucan. As the original colony dwindled its residents were replaced with Irish settlers. They arrived here after fleeing the great potato famine in Ireland. The Donnelly’s, infamous for their exploits and subsequent violent demise at the hands of vigilantes, were amongst those new settlers. This rich heritage is captured in the newly erected Lucan & Area Heritage and Donnelly Museum on Lucan’s Main Street. An absolutely fascinating place to visit. Stories and artifacts about these and other historically significant events, including local harness (horse) racing, news and genealogy, are on display at the museum. Lucan’s vibrant Main Street is comprised of quaint shops and a variety of dining options to satisfy both your taste buds and your pocketbook. Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat or fine dining, you will certainly find it in Lucan. The village of Granton, is truly a cordial spot. In its early years the village was named after a village in Scotland, called Granton, by an early resident named Mr.
Christie. Granton, Scotland was his birthplace. He was the superintendent of the local division of the Grand Trunk Railway. Clandeboye is the birthplace of Clint Hodgins. Mr. Hodgins is an inductee into both the US and Canadian Hall of Fame. In 1959 he was named the best driver of the year for driving two of the world’s fastest pacers at the time. If you seek first class recreational facilities, Lucan-Biddulph has it all. Facilities that include an attractive arena, gymnasium, assembly hall, horse track, outdoor pool, soccer fields and
baseball diamonds. Lucan-Biddulph also boasts a golf course, several churches and a variety of service clubs. Whatever you choose to do here, the area will make you feel “right at home”.
