The Dorchester Mill Pond is a site of natural beauty, ideal subject matter for photographers, and the perfect place to sit and reflect. Stroll along the walking path, wooden walkways, or viewing bridge and consider the diverse assortment of ecological wonders surrounding you. An abundance of flora and fauna blanket the ground beneath the Carolinian Forest, comprised of trees such as black cherry, white oak, pine and maple which are also home to several rare species of birds. Shrubs including raspberry bushes and dog weeds are an ideal food source for some of the creatures who freely roam the banks of the Mill Pond, such as cottontails, raccoons, and deer. The pond itself is a thriving bio-network; its inhabitants quite often camouflaged by the colourful lilies suspended within its waters. Water fowl, turtles, and bass all co-exist in this idyllic setting. Visitors may be surprised to catch a glimpse of beavers, rare to this area, but sometimes evident from their well constructed dams. This century old pond and newly constructed dam, are an example of a flourishing eco-system located in the heart of Dorchester.
